The Maja

According to Wikipedia's description, a maja (masculine form majo) is not unlike what we might call (or would have called, in the not too distant past) a 'chav'. The main difference would seem to be that the majos and majas wore traditional Spanish dress (in contrast to the the French styles affected by many of the Spanish elite under the influence of the Enlightenment), while the chavs prefer the latest designer gear.

The origin of the word 'chav' is obscure, but the most commonly cited derivation is from the Romany word for a child.
